Puntius oligolepis
Common name: Oligolepis Barb, Yellow-Banded Barb
Origin: India, specifically the rivers in the Western Ghats and surrounding areas.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 22 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 75 liters+ (a planted tank with open swimming spaces is ideal)
Adult fish size: 6 - 7 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Feed a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Vegetables like spinach or algae-based wafers can also be included.
Tankmates: Peaceful and social fish, they do best in schools of 6 or more. Suitable tankmates include other peaceful species like tetras, rasboras, small catfish, and other community fish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species, as they may stress the barbs.
Note: The Oligolepis Barb is an attractive and relatively peaceful species with striking yellow and black horizontal bands on its body. It is an active swimmer that enjoys being in schools, which helps it feel more secure and reduces stress. A planted tank with gentle water flow and hiding places is ideal for this species. Like many barbs, they are hardy but will do best with stable water conditions and a varied diet.
