Puntius padamya
Common name: Padamya Barb, Ruby Barb
Origin: Myanmar (Burma), found in the rivers and streams of the region.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 22 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 75 liters+ (a well-planted tank with open swimming spaces is ideal)
Adult fish size: 7 - 8 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Feed a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They also enjoy vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or algae-based foods.
Tankmates: Peaceful and active, Puntius padamya is best kept in small schools (5 or more) and does well with other peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, and smaller catfish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species. These barbs are quite social and can thrive in a community tank where they feel secure with other active, peaceful fish.
Note: The Padamya Barb is a stunning species, with a vibrant ruby-red color, especially in males. They are lively swimmers and appreciate an environment where they can school and explore. Provide plenty of plants, open swimming areas, and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat. They are relatively hardy but thrive in stable water conditions and benefit from a balanced, varied diet.
