Puntius pentazona
Common name: Five-Barred Barb, Five-Banded Barb
Origin: Southeast Asia, primarily found in Malaysia and Sumatra.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 22 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 75 liters+ (a tank with plenty of swimming space and some plants)
Adult fish size: 7 - 8 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Provide a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They also appreciate some plant matter, like blanched spinach or algae-based foods.
Tankmates: Peaceful and social. They do well in groups of 5 or more and should be kept with other peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, small catfish, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid keeping with larger or overly aggressive fish that might stress them.
Note: The Five-Barred Barb is an active and attractive species, with striking dark vertical bands running along its body. This hardy fish is well-suited for a community tank, and its peaceful nature makes it a great choice for beginners. They enjoy being in schools and thrive in a well-planted tank with open swimming areas. Stable water conditions and a varied diet will keep them healthy and vibrant.
