Pymelodus pictus
Common name: Pictus Catfish
Origin: South America, primarily found in the rivers and streams of the Amazon and Orinoco basins.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 100 liters+ (a tank with plenty of swimming space and hiding places)
Adult fish size: 12 - 15 cm
Diet: Carnivore. Feed a varied diet including high-quality sinking pellets, live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. They are also known to accept earthworms and other meaty foods. They may also nibble on some plant matter, though their primary diet should be protein-rich.
Tankmates: Peaceful, but they are active and fast-moving, so they should be kept with similarly sized or larger, non-aggressive fish. Good tankmates include tetras, barbs, danios, and larger peaceful species. Avoid small or slow-moving fish that might get outcompeted for food. Since Pictus Catfish are nocturnal and like to hide, it’s important to provide plenty of hiding spots with plants, caves, or driftwood.
Note: The Pictus Catfish is an attractive and active species known for its distinctive spotted pattern and whiskers. It is a social fish that does well in groups but can be a bit skittish when first introduced to a new environment. As nocturnal creatures, they are most active during the evening and at night, but will adapt to a well-lit daytime environment as well. They appreciate a tank with plenty of space to swim, and a secure lid is essential, as they are known to jump.
Note: This small chart is only the basics and is not enough for you to decide if this fish is right for you! Do your own detailed research before buying!!
