Rineloricaria fallax
Common name: False Twig Catfish
Origin: Native to South America, found in rivers and streams in Brazil, particularly in the Rio Xingu and other regions of the Amazon basin.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 100 liters+ (with plenty of hiding spots and a fine substrate)
Adult fish size: 10 - 12 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Rineloricaria fallax is a peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish that feeds on a variety of foods, including sinking pellets, algae wafers, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also graze on biofilm and algae that naturally grow in the aquarium.
Tankmates: Peaceful and ideal for community tanks. These catfish do well with other peaceful species like tetras, rasboras, and other bottom-dwelling fish such as Corydoras. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or large species that may outcompete them for food or space.
Note: Known for their remarkable "twig-like" appearance, Rineloricaria fallax is an excellent addition to planted aquariums, as they blend well with the surroundings. They have specialized adaptations for blending into their environment, including elongated fins that resemble twigs or sticks. These fish are peaceful and primarily bottom-dwellers, spending most of their time sifting through the substrate or attaching themselves to rocks or plants. They appreciate having access to a fine-gravel or sand substrate, and they thrive in a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces. A peaceful, well-maintained tank with lots of places to hide will keep them happy.
