Rocio octofasciatum
Common name: Rainbow Cichlid (also known as the Cuban Cichlid)
Origin: Native to Central America, specifically found in rivers and lakes in Cuba, as well as parts of Mexico and Belize.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 7.0 - 8.0
- Aquarium size: 200 liters+ (a large tank is needed to accommodate their territorial nature)
Adult fish size: 20 - 25 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Rocio octofasciatum will accept a variety of foods, including high-quality cichlid pellets, live foods like brine shrimp, earthworms, and frozen foods. They also enjoy vegetable matter like spirulina and blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach. It's important to provide a varied diet to ensure their health and vibrancy.
Tankmates: While relatively peaceful compared to other cichlids, Rocio octofasciatum can be territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept with other robust and similar-sized fish that won’t be bullied, such as larger tetras, other cichlids, or peaceful catfish. Avoid small or shy species, as they may be harassed. When breeding, they can become more aggressive, so providing plenty of hiding spaces and territories is crucial.
Note: The Rainbow Cichlid is a stunning species, known for its vibrant colors and peaceful temperament, making it a prized aquarium fish. The males often display brighter colors and more pronounced markings during breeding periods, including a beautiful mix of reds, blues, and oranges. This species thrives in well-planted tanks with plenty of open swimming areas and places to hide. They are not overly demanding in terms of water quality but benefit from regular water changes. Their striking appearance and relatively easy care make them a popular choice for experienced aquarists who have the space to accommodate them.
