Product description

Common name: Red Spotted Goby

Origin: Native to freshwater and brackish streams in Southeast Asia, particularly found in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Optimal living conditions:

  • Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
  • pH: 6.5 - 7.5
  • Aquarium size: 80 liters+ (for a small group or pair)

Adult fish size: 6 - 7 cm

Diet: Carnivore. Sicyopus rubicundus feeds primarily on small invertebrates, detritus, and plant matter in the wild. In captivity, they can be fed live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Supplementing their diet with high-quality sinking pellets and occasional algae or vegetable matter will help keep them healthy. Providing a varied diet is essential to ensure they receive all the nutrients they need.

Tankmates: Peaceful but territorial. Red Spotted Gobies are relatively peaceful but can be territorial, especially in small aquariums. They are best kept with other peaceful species, such as small tetras, rasboras, and other gobies, that will not compete for the same food sources. Larger or more aggressive fish should be avoided, as they may outcompete the goby for food. A group of these gobies can be kept together, but providing plenty of hiding spots and territories will help minimize aggression.

Note: The Red Spotted Goby is known for its beautiful coloration, featuring a reddish body with distinctive dark spots, which makes it a striking addition to a freshwater aquarium. These fish prefer tanks with good water movement, similar to their natural river habitats. A tank with plenty of rocks, driftwood, and caves will provide the necessary hiding spots and mimic their natural environment. They also prefer well-oxygenated water, so ensure a good filtration system to maintain water quality. Keep in mind that they may be more comfortable in slightly brackish water, but they can adapt to fully freshwater setups.
