Synodontis decorus
Common name: Decorus Catfish
Origin: Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 200 liters+ (larger aquariums are recommended due to its size and active nature)
Adult fish size: 25 - 30 cm
Diet: Omnivorous. Synodontis decorus accepts a wide range of foods, including high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also appreciate some plant-based foods, such as blanched zucchini or spinach. As bottom dwellers, they may scavenge leftover food from the substrate, but it's important to provide them with a balanced and varied diet to keep them healthy.
Tankmates: Generally peaceful but may become territorial, especially when they mature. It's best to keep them with other non-aggressive species such as tetras, barbs, and peaceful cichlids. Avoid keeping them with smaller fish, as they might become targets during feeding time. They are bottom-dwelling fish and should not be kept with other catfish species that may compete for space or food.
Note: Synodontis decorus is a striking catfish known for its unique appearance. Its elongated body is decorated with a pattern of dark spots and bands, giving it a stunning appearance. Like many Synodontis species, it has elongated pectoral fins that give it a somewhat "graceful" look in the water. These catfish are active at night and prefer an aquarium with plenty of hiding places, such as caves, driftwood, and rocks, where they can feel secure during the day. They are hardy and can adapt to a variety of water conditions but thrive in well-maintained, stable environments.
