Thayeria boehlkei
Common name: Harlequin Tetra
Origin: Native to the Amazon River Basin in South America, particularly found in Brazil and surrounding areas in slow-moving streams and tributaries.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 22 - 28°C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Aquarium size: 60 liters or larger, depending on the number of fish
Adult fish size: 4 - 5 cm
Diet: Harlequin Tetras are omnivorous and should be fed a varied diet, including high-quality flake or pellet food, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Providing plant matter such as spinach or algae wafers is also beneficial for their health.
Tankmates: They are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other small, non-aggressive species. Suitable tankmates include other tetras, rasboras, small barbs, and peaceful gouramis. Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive fish, as they may become stressed or bullied.
Note: This species is highly appreciated for its striking appearance, especially the vibrant orange and black coloration on its body, which resembles a harlequin pattern. These fish are peaceful and thrive in groups, so it's best to keep them in schools of six or more to display their natural social behavior. A planted tank with plenty of hiding spots will mimic their natural habitat and allow them to feel secure. Harlequin Tetras are relatively hardy, but they require stable water conditions to thrive.
Note: This basic chart provides a general overview, but it's important to do additional research to meet their specific care requirements!
