Thorichthys maculipinnis
Common name: Spotted Cichlid
Origin: Native to Central America, primarily found in the rivers and streams of Mexico.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28°C
- pH: 7.0 - 8.0 (slightly alkaline)
- Aquarium size: Minimum 200 liters (or larger for more than one pair)
Adult fish size: 10 - 12 cm
Diet: Thorichthys maculipinnis is omnivorous. Feed them a varied diet consisting of high-quality pellets, flake foods, and live or frozen options like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They will also appreciate some vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or zucchini.
Tankmates: This species is semi-aggressive, particularly when breeding, but they are generally peaceful. They do well with other medium-sized cichlids that are not too aggressive. Suitable tankmates include peaceful barbs, catfish, tetras, and other similar-sized fish. Avoid keeping with overly aggressive species or slow-moving fish.
Note: The Spotted Cichlid is appreciated for its vibrant colors and patterns, especially the striking black spots on the fins and body. These fish are best kept in pairs or small groups and will exhibit interesting behaviors, especially during breeding. Providing plenty of hiding spaces, plants, and rocks is important, as they tend to establish territories, especially when they start to breed. They are relatively easy to care for but require stable water conditions to thrive.
Note: This basic guide gives a good overview, but be sure to do more research to fully meet their care needs before adding them to your aquarium!
