Trichogaster lalius
Common name: Dwarf Gourami
Origin: South Asia, particularly found in India, Bangladesh, and parts of Myanmar.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28°C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Aquarium size: Minimum 60 liters
Adult fish size: 5 - 7 cm
Diet: Dwarf Gouramis are omnivores. They thrive on a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Adding some plant matter like spinach or algae-based foods will help ensure a balanced diet.
Tankmates: Trichogaster lalius is generally peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful species. Good tankmates include small tetras, rasboras, livebearers, and other calm fish. Avoid aggressive species as they may stress out the gouramis. Males of the same species may become territorial, so it’s best to keep only one male per tank unless there is ample space and hiding places.
Note: The Dwarf Gourami is popular for its vibrant colors, particularly the red, blue, and orange hues on males. They are relatively easy to care for and enjoy well-planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots. Be cautious when introducing other species to their tank, as they can sometimes become shy or stressed in more active or competitive environments. These fish also have labyrinth organs, meaning they can breathe air directly, which makes them suited for tanks with lower oxygen levels.
Note: This basic care guide is meant to get you started, but always research more detailed care information to ensure your Dwarf Gourami thrives!
