Trichogaster trichopterus
Common name: Blue Gourami or Three Spot Gourami
Origin: Southeast Asia, found in slow-moving waters, ponds, and streams across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28°C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Aquarium size: Minimum 80 liters for a single specimen or a small group.
Adult fish size: 10 - 12 cm
Diet: Trichogaster trichopterus is an omnivore and will accept a wide variety of foods. Offer a balanced diet that includes high-quality pellets, flakes, live foods (like brine shrimp and bloodworms), and frozen foods. Supplement their diet with plant matter, such as algae wafers, spinach, or blanched zucchini, to maintain a healthy diet.
Tankmates: These gouramis are generally peaceful but can be territorial, particularly males during breeding. They do best in a community tank with other peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, and other small fish. Avoid placing them with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species. If keeping multiple males, ensure the tank is large enough to provide hiding spots and territories.
Note: The Blue Gourami is easily recognized by its iridescent blue coloration and three distinct dark vertical stripes across its body, giving it the name Three Spot Gourami. It is a labyrinth fish, meaning it has a special organ that allows it to breathe air directly from the surface, so ensure the tank has access to the surface for them to gulp air. They are hardy and adaptable, making them a great choice for beginners.
Despite their peaceful nature, males can become aggressive towards each other, especially in confined spaces, so it's best to keep only one male per tank unless there is plenty of space. These gouramis appreciate plenty of plant cover and gentle water flow, as they tend to enjoy more calm environments. Adding floating plants is also beneficial as they provide hiding spots and help create a natural habitat.
Note: These gouramis are relatively easy to care for and make excellent additions to a peaceful, well-maintained community aquarium.
